WALKING FOR WEIGHT LOSS

Cup of tea and chocolate
It's GET WALKING WEEK, so why not incorporate walking into your daily routine and reap the weight loss rewards?
After two years of slow and steady weight loss, we know this form of exercise has helped.
Apart from the health benefits a lot of people forget that walking translates into CALORIES. Just half an hour of walking could mean you burn 100 calories or more per day. This could equate to 10 lbs in weight loss per year.
Why not take a look at what we said about CALORIES.
WALKING is not just a social activity either, because quite often I'm on my own. Shopping is a good example.
I've got a small pedometer and can track just how far I walk and on a shopping trip I can clock up 1.5 miles easily by parking a little further away and wandering down a street or two before going into the shops. I also get to
carry a few shopping bags which adds to my 'exercise'. No one realises I'm 'exercising' as I'm dressed in my normal attire.
I like to use the stairs instead of escalators too. All these little bits of exercise DO add up and have contributed to our weight loss and helped us keep the weight off too. After losing 7 stone between us, we find walking is now second nature. It's now part of our lifestyle. Perhaps it's unfashionable to walk these days? Or taking the car has become a habit for nipping to the shops in the car, rather than walking? I must admit it was something I never really thought could make a difference to my life - but our lives have changed dramatically because of walking.
Even now, when we walk to the pub, friends are still surprised that we've actually walked - less than a mile. But we know walking has added to our weight loss success. Apart from the health benefits, we walk for reward - we walk for our cake! We walk so we can eat our favourite foods.

Walking actually takes less time than other forms of activity. Just step outside your door - and your exercise has begun. There are no special clothes to buy if you are adding a short walk to your daily routine. In these recessionary times - there are no membership fees or petrol costs either. Perhaps that's why past generations were slimmer - they didn't have cars.
After spending a few days away, we were using public transport a lot. We found our walking increased because of this. When we mistakenly got off the bus one stop earlier, we had to walk just over half a mile to our destination. It didn't take long to walk - just 10 minutes. But it occurred to us that if you got off the tube/bus one stop earlier every day on your way to and from work - this small adjustment to your routine could add up to a significant weight loss in no time.

Do you know how many calories you can eat each day?
Here's a link to our very first blog post about our weight loss journey, which we began in January 2011. We started this blog as a way of recording what we ate while losing weight. The blog is a food diary, and contains lots of recipes, tips and ideas about losing weight.
You'll find our WEIGHT LOSS PLAN here.
