GAMMON STEAK

GAMMON STEAK, egg, beans and chips makes for a simple mid-week dinner. At around 600 calories it's very satisfying and filling. Our chips were home baked with the skin on.
We used a slightly waxier potato (Harmony) than normal because that's all we had available. They still work well, with a lot of flavour, but the outside doesn't crisp up as much. If you're after a crispier result, then use a more floury potato, which we recommend.
We've got some tips worth thinking about (below) when buying gammon. I wouldn't be surprised if these tips end up on some cookery programme or other very soon. Some things are obvious to some people, and not to others. So please give us a 'shout out' if you pass any of our tips on to others, and help spread the word.
Gammon steak is often sold in packs (of two) ranging from anywhere between 300g and 450g. As a consumer we spot a pack of gammon steaks for two, and portion size has already been determined. At around 160 calories per 100g, each gammon steak can range from approx 240 calories (150g) to 360 calories (225g).
The steak in this picture weighed just 120g and was filling enough with everything else. Portion size is a personal thing, but, you might find yourself eating more than you really would have done if you ate large pre-packed steaks. Save money, save calories!
We generally buy a corner gammon from the butcher because it's more economical and we think the end result is much tastier. Gammon steaks will typically cost up to £4 per pack of two. A 1.5 kg gammon joint cost me £6.50 at the butcher (far cheaper than the supermarket). This will give us 4 gammon steaks with the rest of the meat going into a pot to be simmered until cooked through. This gives us HAM which we can use for slicing, salads, soups and sandwiches.
